Six friends. One killer. Who do you trust? A teen girl is missing after a night of partying; 30 years later, the discovery of her body reopens a cold case in an absorbing novel featuring a small-town cop determined to finally get to the truth - for fans of Tana French and Kate Atkinson.Â
"What a marvel! A corkscrew-twisty, knife-sharp thriller - yet it doubles as a tender ode to loss and longing. Prepare to be haunted." (A. J. Finn, author of the New York Times best seller The Woman in the Window)
On a scorching July night in 1983, a group of teenagers goes camping in the forest. Bright and brilliant, they are destined for great things, and the youngest of the group - Aurora Jackson - is delighted to be allowed to tag along. The evening starts like any other - they drink, they dance, they fight, they kiss. Some of them slip off into the woods in pairs, others are left jealous and heartbroken. But by morning, Aurora has disappeared. Her friends claim she was safe the last time they saw her, right before she went to sleep. An exhaustive investigation is launched, but no trace of the teenager is ever found.
Thirty years later, Aurora's body is unearthed in a hideaway that only the six friends knew about, and Jonah Sheens is put in charge of solving the long-cold case. Back in 1983, as a young cop in their small town, he had known the teenagers - including Aurora - personally, even before taking part in the search. Now, he's determined to finally get to the truth of what happened that night. Sheens's investigation brings the members of the camping party back to the forest, where they will be confronted once again with the events that left one of them dead and all of them profoundly changed forever.
This searing, psychologically captivating novel marks the arrival of a dazzling new talent and the start of a new series featuring Detective Chief Inspector Jonah Sheens.Â
"This enjoyably chilling suspense tale...conveys both the thrills and the dangers of being a teenager on the brink of adult independence.... The fascination of this story is in the character studies of the surviving children, all grown up now and participants in a dark mystery that they all wish had never seen the light of day." (The New York Times Book Review)
"The mystery intrigues and twists, offering enough red herrings and moments of police procedural to please fans of the genre." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Neatly plotted and nicely atmospheric.... This British import is plausible and eminently satisfying. Encore, please." (Booklist)

I loved this book. The police procedural elements are meticulously detailed and expertly interwoven to progress the plot, whilst interviews in the present day deftly shape the characters of suspects and detectives alike. I was kept guessing until the end!I’m looking forward to the return of Jonah Sheens and his team – Gytha Lodge is certainly a big new talent in this genre!

Sheens’s investigation brings the members of the camping party back to the forest, where they will be confronted once again with the events that left one of them dead, and all of them profoundly changed forever. My Thoughts: In the beginning of She Lies in Wait, a young girl, camping with her family, stumbles upon a concave hideout and discovers a skeleton. The subsequent investigation reveals a thirty-year cold case and the body of a missing teenage girl, Aurora Jackson. The story spotlights the present and back in 1983, zeroing in on the seven teenagers who were partying with drugs while camping out. The dynamics of the group added information for the investigators. The constables probe into the past once again, while discovering new suspects in the present.I liked how multiple perspectives of the detectives and the adult versions of those six remaining teens kept the story moving along, leading ever so slowly toward a resolution of the crime. I liked Jonah the most, and also felt an affinity for the newbie constable, Juliette Hanson, who struggles to do everything correctly, but who is also sometimes quick to judgment.Slowly unfolding hints of what might lie ahead kept me glued to the pages of this 5 star read.
"She Lies in Wait," is a fantastic book that I devoured in 6 hours. I waffled back and forth between my guess as to who may have committed the crime, who had the motive, who could have lived with themselves for thirty years, and I still hadn't made a decisive guess until near the end! Gytha writes each character with enough depth to be considered a viable suspect, which means no one is off the suspect list with any certainty! The story has an easy to follow transition between past and present, provides a voice to the victim, as well as the suspects, and masterfully intertwines their individual stories. The police squad members (Americans may want to brush up on the DCI, constable terminology first) have their own idiosyncrasies that play into the mystery and make the reading even more enjoyable. As an Anglophile, I thoroughly enjoyed the British setting and nuances. It is a wonderful "whodunit" and I cannot wait to read what comes next and see which characters return in this series!
I was determined to stick with this story, but it was a struggle. The first two thirds of the book moved along at a glacial pace. It picked up towards the end. I think this is the author's first book so I'm sure she will adjust the pacing in her future works. Severe lack of tension for quite a while before the story played out. I really liked the main character, Jonah, and think he will be good in the planned series. Not so sure about Hanson (his assistant)....a few things were left hanging with her.
